September Volunteer Needs

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

URGENT VOLUNTEER NEED – Saturday, Sept. 7th for Convoy of Hope
Cook Convention Center 255 N. Main St., Memphis, 38103
Event is 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Volunteers will work 3 ½ hour shifts 9:00 to 12:30 and 12:00 to 3:30

Volunteer Mid-South needs some outgoing and reliable volunteers for a project on September 7th we are doing in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and Hands On Network.
Volunteers will be manning a booth at the Convoy of Hope event at the Cook Convention Center.  The event serves low income and some homeless people with a variety of services.
We would be encouraging the event participants to sit with us for a few minutes to begin completing an Emergency Financial First Aid Kit that will help them collect information they would need if a disaster occurred and they were forced to evacuate.  We saw a lack of this sort of preparedness when we helped with the evacuees form Hurricane Katrina.

There are 2 kinds of volunteer positions
Recruiter: Volunteers will be outside the booth recruiting participants and offering them the opportunity to get a FREE Build a Disaster Kit Bag and to win gift cards if they work with a volunteer to begin completing a Emergency Financial First Aid Kit.  6 recruiters are needed. Use the link below to sign up for this volunteer job:

Disaster Plan Helpers: Volunteers will work in the Disaster Plan Completion Area and assist participants in BEGINNING TO COMPLETE an Emergency Financial First Aid Kit.  A brief volunteer training will be provided.  Volunteers do not need deep financial knowledge; they just need to explain the importance of having financial records ready in case of disaster or evacuation. They also need to be able to help participants understand the FREE plan book.  24 disaster plan helpers are needed. Use the link below to sign up for this volunteer job:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for Emergency Response Drills – 9/9 and 9/22
Correction on Oak Court Mall Emergency Response Drill - Sept. 22, 2013
The date of this drill was originally listed incorrectly as August 22nd.

Would you like to participate in a community emergency response drill?  This is a great way to serve and help prepare our community to respond to emergencies. Volunteers are needed to act as “evacuees, patient’s or victim’s” in several upcoming exercises/drills. Many of the volunteers will be moulaged (wear stage make-up), act as victims, and many will be transported to area hospitals via ambulance or bus. A big component of these drills will be testing the hospitals response to a “surge” of patients.  Volunteers will return to the original location upon completion. Volunteers are an important piece of this drill as the live people provide a more realistic experience for the responders. The experience is great for the volunteer as well as it helps the person think through how they may need to respond should an actual event occur, and how to prepare in advance. Volunteers participating in previous exercises expressed that their experience made a big difference for them in understanding their patients or client’s experiences.
